A crown, or cap, is used to encase the entire visible portion of a tooth- acting as a new outer surface. Crowns are typically used when a tooth is decayed or broken to an extent that fillings are not able to repair the problem. They can provide a protective shell around a damaged or decayed tooth to strengthen it, and also help improve the appearance of the tooth. Even though crowns may be created from different materials, the most common crowns typically have some mixture of porcelain in them to give them a look and feel similar to a natural tooth.
How it's done:
Your first visit to NK Family Dentistry for your crown treatment will include a reshaping of the tooth, as well as impressions being taken to create the crown. Typically a small portion of the tooth needs to be removed for the crown to fit properly. After the reshaping takes place, we will use special materials to take an impression. This impression will be given to our lab technician in our very own building to make your permanent crown. Before sending you home, we will provide you with a temporary crown to cover your tooth between visits.
Depending on your schedule, our lab technician can have the crown ready for you the same day or a day after your visit! Your Waltham cosmetic dentist will then remove the temporary crown and fit the new permanent one. Before cementing the permanent crown in place, we will ensure that it fits comfortably and matches the color of your teeth as well as your bite.
